MYTH: BPH is an old man’s disease.
FACT: BPH usually affects men from their 50s. This is because as a man ages, his prostate naturally enlarges due to hormonal changes. Some men can begin experiencing BPH symptoms as early as in their 40s.

FACT: Hormonal changes are inevitable as men age and his prostate naturally enlarges due to these hormonal changes. However, these can be minimised by proper diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Some lucky men may even have an enlarged prostate without experiencing any symptom.

MYTH: BPH can lead to prostate cancer.
FACT: BPH is a non-cancerous condition. However, its early symptoms often may be confused with prostate cancer because both diseases lead to similar urologic symptoms. There is no link between BPH and cancer, that is, having BPH does not increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Keeping the prostate in check with your doctor is important however because a cancer could not be detected on the basis of urination problems when BPH is present.

MYTH: Frequent or infrequent sexual activity is unhealthy for the prostate.
FACT:

There is no evidence that BPH is prevented, caused or aggravated by sexual habits.

BPH is not known to cause any sexual function impairment. There has been confusion because the incidence of sexual dysfunction increases with age, and is therefore often present when BPH has developed. The only link between the disorders is the age factor, and BPH does not induce sexual dysfunction and vice versa. A prostatectomy (partial or complete removal of the prostate) will preclude ejaculation. The sooner you see a doctor, the earlier you will be treated.
